The Dark Side

Last night I crossed over. Completely appropriate since today is September 1st, the dark nail polish is back.

Thanks so much to the nice little nail spa in North Hills for having something dark and to my liking since I didn't like my own color I brought with me to use (eek! because I'm afraid of germs) but it was a new bottle...LUCKY! Its pretty much black...reminded me of this color I'm trying to get my hands on but can not find anywhere online anymore...

I'm sure I am rushing things since I have had fall fever since the end of June...

However, the past few mornings here in Raleigh have been a little cooler...and the past few nights have been a little cooler...and this gives me hope fall is coming.

If I were to pull out the cashmere, jeans, and riding boots I would either A: get funny looks or B: pass out walking to the Starbucks. Although I am running out of summer clothes (really) this is not happening...

Fall transition is needed! Stuff to wear now, make little wardrobe adjustments to, and then take into the fall and winter months. So no cashmere yet for this girl, but the new Shoshanna shipment has sort of inspired me to have hope.

Happy Friday! I've had 3 cups of coffee, been up since 6, and failed to listen to my GPS; resulting in a giant loop around the beltline.Lets say I am definitely ready for the weekend. I NEED it, as I am sure many of you do as well!

Q: At what point do your friends give you an intervention and tell you that you are wearing too much jewelry?
A: Never, because there is never enough. So I hope...I really like vintage looking things and huge bauble bangles. I still need my hands on a Cartier LOVE bracelet...

Summer makes me so lazy when it comes to getting dressed. Raleigh is seriously one million degrees and my wardrobe lately is too easy. Throw a dress over my head and I'm ready; and it's probably navy because 4 of my favorite dresses this summer are navy. To make me feel less guilty over taking only a second to get dressed and running out of the house I'm making up for it by wearing lots of jewelry.

Too Much? I thought so too...this was just for fun. I wish I was cool enough to pull this off.

The good stuff has not even come out of my jewelry drawer, I feel like its for special occasion or holidays. Summer jewelry is random mixed matched bangles, wraps, the more random the better. Extra points if when moving you make tons of noise.

Arm of jewels thanks to Madison. I always like her jewelry style, said send me a pic of your arm and this is what I got. Perfect.

Note that blue thing below closest to my wrist? It is a Twistband (www.thetwistband.com) and I am obsessed! Since I end up with my hair on top of my head every day this is not only the best hair tie ever but looks like an addition to the madness on my arm.

So until fall or at least non-100 degree days arrive, keep the jewelry. Fall fever is taking over and we are only in July. I think it takes me longer to grab jewels, shoes and find my sunglasses in the morning that it does to put on an outfit lately. I only have on this Alice and Olivia kimono dress thanks to Christina. It's not navy...

Thankful it's Tuesday...

I don’t mind Mondays- it’s Tuesdays and Wednesdays I am not fond of for whatever reason. While going through my emails this morning, filtering the junk mail, all of the Google+ invites, and making email filters like OCD I had come across this little chain deep in the archives. The “Thankful it's Monday” email list, created by a Monday hater, you list a couple small things you are thankful for and pass on to the next. Sort of the email version of a snap cup; boosts the mood, re-cap the weekend; little things that make you happy, say whatever you please- just pass on.

I know it’s awful of me, but I press the “Delete Message On Mailbox & Handheld” button and proceed with my day 99.9% of the time…. However, I thought this may be something deserving of the Fleur blog. A little Tuesday pick me up, and “Thankful it’s Tuesday” has a much better ring to it!

So, in no particular order (I like things in 5s), here is my list of what I am thankful for this ~~Monday~~ Tuesday:

1. Today, I am having a great hair day. Anyone who sees me often knows this is not always the case, and 6 out of 7 days I have bed head. I will give credit to my new Bumble and Bumble conditioner.
2. I have a new playlist, and new music makes me oh so happy. Thank you CB for my new mix!
3. Starbucks. Needed no matter what the day. Also, thankful the nice people at the Starbucks let me steal a lighter to take care of #5 on the list...
4. New cleaning products. Opening up something new to use will brighten my day. Sounding insane yet? Be happy you were not here to witness the new canister of Clorox antibacterial wipes. Seriously.
5. The Blue Hydrangea candle I have lit at the side of the desk. Until I get a delivery of blue hydrangeas, this will have to work…Much happier already. Even for a Tuesday.

Looks like the candle will have to suffice...

Do you have girl crushes on anyone? Not in a "Single White Female" kind of way, but more like you want to immolate their style. I have a few. I think they're pretty obvious ( in my opinion), but then again I like a bohemian with bangs. Who would have thought?

Brigitte Bardot. The ultimate bombshell.

Kate Moss. Obvious.

Gwyn has been a long time obsession of mine.

Nicole Richie. The ultimate bohemian. So cool.

Sienna Miller. She's my #1. I really loved her during the "Alfie" years, but she still has a special place in my heart.

Parker Posey. So confident to pull of a 70's afro. Great name too.

Yes Kate Hudson. Yes.

I've not always been a Drew Barrymore fan, but this outfit combo along with the ombre hair won me over.

Selma Blair. She's a tad under the radar...maybe that's why I love her.

Well...it's finally here in full swing. As I'm writing this post I'm hearing my 2 year old get out of bed for the 20th time this evening. This would be much more tolerable if I weren't coming fresh off of a broken lamp and a dinner consisting of pretzels and jelly beans (for her not me). When is this phase over?!?! We had our first major meltdown the other day. The trigger came in the form of a pink sparkly jelly sandal with a bright yellow flower on top. I should have know not to come between a girl and her shoes!

Don't be fooled by this sweet innocent look. She probably just finished coloring my newly upholstered arm chair with orange marker.

At least I can look forward to this little buddy coming soon to Fleur.

I've had Jackie O on the brain recently. Maybe it's due to the new Kennedy movie coming out, or the fact that I've always wanted to have that effortlessly chic style for which she is now known, but I'm finding my self yearning for spring pieces that are reminiscent.

In fact, my faithful Marc Jacobs aviators finally broke after 6 years of having them ( quite the accomplishment) and now I'm leaning towards some obnoxiously large Oliver Peoples, hoping I might be able to magically transform into the style icon.

Mother Denim

I'm really excited about the new denim line we recently brought into Fleur called Mother Denim. The line was developed by two "competitors" in the denim world. Tim Kaeding was a former designer for 7 of All Mankind while Lela Tillam worked in the sales department for Citizens of Humanity.

It's got a real throw back feel to it, not to mention a great fit and an awesome hand. Kaeding said the secret to the fabric like feel is through weaving the fibers and then treating them with a finish. The result...one ridiculous denim line!

We recently got their version of the skinny jean in white. It fits like a dream and the clean lines and wash put them on my short list!!

NOLA Street Style

I have just returned from a weekend trip to New Orleans to celebrate the wedding of a great old friend.

It was my first time to NOLA and ooh, what a time it was.

A town with so much history, buzz and life. I was wide-eyed and excited every corner I turned.

A city seeped in tradition, painted homes and old french history keeps the locals eclectic and interesting.

From street performers to local wanderers, the numerous styles and fearless use of color was so refreshing and romantic.

sigh... I can't wait to go back!

Inspiration

I have always been inspired by the Sartorialist Blog.

Each morning I check out the photos posted to the site and try to imagine the life of the subject.

How they woke up that morning, put on their clothes and walk out the door, only to be snapped by the famous Sartorialist and posted on a blog for millions to see.

And then I wonder about the "Sartorialist..." who is the man behind the camera, who is the man that sees the detail that none of us do.

Finally this video answered all of my questions and really inspires me to be more perceptive and find the beauty in everything.

My new years resolution is to lead a more visual life.

Every year I notice that Christmas is starting earlier and earlier?

Or is time just flying by much faster than before?

Either way... it is not yet Thanksgiving,

I love Thanksgiving, although it's 2 weeks away, I cannot stop thinking about it.

Planning has begun for the yummy menu, table settings and what to wear.

I like feeling festive on Thanksgiving, and that usually means wearing something warm, cozy and rustic.

I really like the photo spread they had in the November Real Simple Magazine.

Fresh faces, warm knits, plaids and jewel tones.

and I just have to add the Ralph Lauren Ricky Tartan Sunglasses, because they have been peaking out at me from the pages of every magazine I pick up and I am starting to love them....

Today I am looking for inspiration.

Inspiration for a hobby, for a delicious dinner idea, or just for figuring out what I am going to put on in the morning.

I think I need to just take some time to explore the world and create a wall of items that spark my interest like Harvey Faircloth's.

I am endlessly awed by their inspiration, so I decided to learn a little bit more.

This is what I found on Linkdin:

I have always had a soft spot for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen... is that weird?

I think it started in their days of Full House and grew exponentially as they paraded around the tabloids as fashion icons.

I was never sure if their clothing lines would ever make it,

but apparently they have.

Elizabeth & James Spring 2011 collection has gained positive press and I am loving the looks, as well.

Inspired by French femininity, the flowing boho-chic dresses and effortless shorts and silky top combos are inspiring and freeing.

And I am also really digging the hats.

MK & A have also designed a sunglasses line so we can all look as mysterious and smart as they do walking around the city with a latte.

Mixing It Up

When the seasons change there is always such a mix of styles.

Some folks decide to still don summer duds,

and others bust out their full on winter gear.

When it is 30 degrees in the morning there is no question but to throw on your boots, sweater, scarf (and facemask.)

But then there are mornings like this one, where I walk out the door to a gloriously, sunny, 60 degree day.

It is hard to know what to wear.

Especially, when I still have summer dresses hanging in my closet... next to my winter threads.

Mix it up with and pair that summer dress with a winter sweater or coat and maybe even a pair of boots -if there is a chill- and you're good to go.

In NC it has been a little less cool and crisp and a lot more humid and muggy.

Although the leaves have changed and the Halloween decor is in full effect, everyone is walking around in sleeveless shirts and sandals.

BUT, the 80 degree temps dropped into the 50's last night and at last, it feels like fall!

The new jegging craze had me very skeptical.

I wasn't sure how I felt about the faux denim look on a tight pair of leggings.

However, I have recently noticed the evolution of the jeggings.

Though once a pair of leggings with a denim looking design, they now are an actually jean with a much lighter feel and a touch more spandex.

In my opinion the jegging has taken the legging into a more acceptable daily wear.

So you don't have to worry about the thinness of your cotton leggings under your a-bit-too-short-sweater or looking like you have just stepped out of yoga class when you are headed out for a night on the town.

All of the successful jean companies have started creating their own version of the jegging and offer a variety of styles, from thicker more jean-like pants to skin-tight legging pant that still provides support for the rear but does not stretch out and sag at your knees.

I just returned from a long-weekend away on the California Coast, where my days were filled with amazing sites and a taste of adventure.

After 20 miles of hiking and 2 nights sleeping under the stars, my bones are a little weary and my brain a bit fogged.

As I recover from the activitizing and slight jet lag I ponder the most comfortable and relaxing duds to don this work week.

But seeing as Loungewear is as luxe as ever this fall, I think I have the perfect solution...

Asian Pear Palate

Yesterday I discovered the Asian Pear.

It is delicious.

It looks like an apple has the texture of a radish but it tastes like the sweetest, juiciest pear you have ever had. AND they are grown right here in North Carolina.

They are delightfully delicious and refreshing, but as I was picking out the very best ones to take home and put in my lunch box, I noticed how perfectly shaped each one was.

The warm golden color and variety of sizes gave me the idea of a possible fall center piece or an overflowing bowl on my side table.

I gobbled one up like an apple today but have been thinking of some more ideas of how to enjoy this fall delicacy:

i just heard Van Morrison belt it over the radio and with the fall temperatures rising into the 80's this weekend it is feeling a little bit like an Indian Summer!

my mind is filling up with fun ideas to take advantage of this warm weekend and get out and about.

*hearing a little bluegrass tonight with the Avett Brothers at the outdoor pavilion

*hitting up the farmers market in the morning to grab my autumn pumpkin

*and trekking it in to the park for a nice hike and sweat and maybe to catch some changing leaves

all in all, staying outside, as much as possible.

I don't know about you, but it has been raining non-stop for about 3 days here in NC. I feel like it is 40 days and 40 nights or something, maybe I should get to building that ark.

But in the meantime I will be looking for some warm duds that will also keep me dry. On cold rainy days, some like to spruce up the mood with bright colors, but I am loving the hunter greens, eggplants and warm taupes for the dull mood that the rain brings.

long weekends

You know when there's a weekend or special event that you look forward to for months? And then it arrives... and comes to an end before you can even blink your eyes.

This would be an accurate description of the past weekend for me.

My best friend got married and had been planning the wedding for a year.

We had appointments and parties to attend and outfits laid out.

Even when it isn't your special day, you feel special just being a part of it and I found the perfect Troubadour dress to enjoy the night in.

And now I am back at work with glorious memories filling my head and dresses swimming in my hamper waiting for the dry-cleaners.

I will be slowly recovering from the over eating, under sleeping and heavy drinking with much rest and lots of veggies.

Nomad Chic and Fashion Week

It is Fashion Week everywhere right now even in North Hills Raleigh, North Carolina. There have been fashionable events peppering the last few days and Fleur is participating in two more before the week comes to a close.

Tomorrow, at a private Fall Fashion Luncheon, we will be showcasing our top, ready-to-wear, Fall Fashion Trends. Animal Prints, Sequin Numbers and Layered Looks are lining our racks in anticipation of the fast approaching fall weather.

On the evening of Thursday, September 16th from 5:30 to 7:30 we will be celebrating "Ladies Night Out" and the end of Fashion Week with North Hills. At this event we will be unveiling our fall sweater arrivals and will be demonstrating the multitude of ways to wrap yourself up in the Nomad-Chic trend.

This event is open to ALL and we will be paired up with the famous Mura restaurant to provide our guests with fresh appetizers and glasses of champagne.

I never did understand the need to surrender our creamy neutral whites with the passing of Labor Day. And I am happy to say, that this year I most definitely did not.

Winter Whites are making a big statement this year, with embellished fabrics, furs and feathers to printed silks and sequins. Elle always does a good job of making sure none of us miss the mark with the new hot trends and this month they completed the looks by including our favorite item in Fleur at the moment; the Pepina Sequin Sweater Jacket By Malene Birger.

Let us be pretty in purples this fall.

From the soft lavenders in the Jules Reid dress to the deep eggplant of the Kirribilla dress we have the color spectrum covered. Although fall is filled with grays and blacks, we have also been seeing a pop of color here and there. Neutral blushes, creamy whites, kelly greens, orangey reds and blue-y purples all evoke a sense of florescence in the fall collections.

From a Labor Day trip in the Mountains to a chilly November football game, I am loving this new look from Harvey Faircloth that we got last week.

The red/orange corduroy skirt screams fall football games to me and the beautiful sleeveless painted ruffle top gives it a soft summer feel. This is the perfect transition piece and allows for many pairing options: a light weight navy cardigan with the ruffle top on a chilly night. Brown tights and boots with that skirt on thanksgiving? love. it.

And considering that I am a University of Virginia fan, I may just have to scoop one up myself for the beginnings of a game-day wardrobe.

this is what i would be wearing if i had those Jules Reid pants and a great lightweight scarf.

Jules Reid is a Virginia girl, but splits her time between the South and New York City. Her distinct collections include a palette of various prints and textiles and have a very "vintage bohemian" feel. At Fleur we have been showcasing Jules Reid's designs since last spring and are looking forward to receiving the fall line any day now.

In an effort to put off the overwhelming task of writing a million thank you notes for wedding gifts, (all of which we love and greatly appreciate, it’s just such a tedious task!) I have become obsessed with the Vivre website. Most of you are probably familiar with this website and I’m just step behind… but as we continue to unpack wedding gifts I have found myself looking for the perfect accents to go with all the beautiful dishes and plates we received. Vivre has such a variety of unique items to help set the perfect table… they have fascinating flatware and candle sticks as well as this gorgeous chandelier by Erickson Beamon!!! -1/4 cup Toasted Pine Nuts heat oven to 450F.

Oil 2 pizza pans and divide dough into 2 balls. Stretch or roll each one until very thin. Drizzle with 1 tsp. olive oil and sprinkle with a little grated parmesan. Arrange mozzarella and tomatoes, add prosciutto (or speck), red pepper flakes and oregano leaves.

Bake at 450F for 12-15 minutes.Before serving drizzle remaining olive oil and lemon juice on the arugula, then place on top of pizza. Add remaining grated parmesan and top with pine nuts

Pecorino Cheese Baked with Honey and Walnuts

-1lb Young Pecorino Toscano

-1/2 cup Honey

-15 Walnut Halves

Pre-heat oven to 450F. Put honey and walnuts in a small bowl. Slice the percorino 1/2" thick and slightly overlap in baking dish, bake for 6 mins at 450F (until slightly runny). Pour honey and walnut mix over the cheese.

Aren't they adorable?? (Katie and Suri are pretty darn cute, too). Always at the height of fashion, mother and daughter were spotted shopping the Grove in LA wearing their fabulous Maloles flats...

Katie is wearing the Georges and Suri is sporting the Petite Zoe. Apparently, Katie likes her Maloles, because she was seen wearing them again on Monday leaving a dance studio in Hollywould. And we all know these starletts never wear anything twice!

It won't surprise you to know that we have carried the Maloles line since we started carrying shoes. Doesn't take a celeb sighting for us to notice quality style...

inspiration is FUNNY- it can make you do the craziest things!! some may stay up all night obsessing, or file it away in a binder...today, i chose to use a hand saw!!

no lie, i was to inches away from shredding my favorite Mint dress- all in the name of a window display!!

let me give you some background... i saw Trina Turk's window display at her NYC location and can't seem to shake it from the brain. it's a jaw dropper, i can barely contain myself!! Joel Woodward, the designer, concocted this brilliant idea-what a creative way to take a summer tent and bring it to life!!

soooo....we couldn't resist the inspiration-took out our tools- and came up with fleur's summer rendition of "the cabana"!! i am not much of a wood worker, and will say, this is my last experience with a hand saw EVER- but more importantly- i am dying to know what y'all think!!

So there I was chatting with my buddies at the pool about what else - our hair..."Oh just color your roots, it is so easy." " Just like sun-in, no problem" So what do I do....off to the store for some touch-up. Well, who says a brunette gone blonde can't be a red? So much for the at-home spa, lesson learned. Normally, I would throw on a very stylish hat to mask the problem and to protect the face, but as you could guess, we have dinner plans! UGH!! Good thing I have my neutral Foley & Corinna dress to balance out the color. Hopefully the table will be candlelight so noone will notice.

Yesterday, while surfing through my "saved" pics of interiors...it struck me... hmmm.. here's another route I can take in redecorating my new space- Whether you sit on it- or wear it- the color combo of yellow and white can turn the PASTIEST into Hawaiian tropics!!
Couldn't resist a split screen and to me... this translates beautifully!! It's a match up of mellow yellows.....

I cannot believe Memorial Day is already -- the official start to summer or beach season for most -- so WTF on this 40 degree weather crap??? We live in North Carolina -- I would maybe expect such temps if i were headed to the Jersey shore but these temps are ridic for us down south. Regardless of the weather -- although today's forcast looks great for NC beaches -- I am going to bust out my new Shoshanna bikini and tunic --WAY CUTE!! Well atleast it is WAY CUTE on the hanger -- I have yet to try it on my "haven't seen the sun in 9 months" body -- could be frightening!! Anyway, I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday weekend -- I will take a bright towel so those who need me can spot me -- otherwise with this lovely tan I will blend right in with the sand!!

There is nothing fun about moving….. EXCEPT being able to decorate a new home! Going through all the old things packed away in the attic is time consuming and tedious. I’d much rather be out antique hunting or fabric shopping! You can rediscover and reinvent yourself in a new house. As I take on this gruesome task I am hanging on to the light at the end of the tunnel… anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new chair and sofa pillows! The colors and prints of the Spring and Summer fashions this year have totally inspired me while decorating my new place. I have fallen in love with the color yellow. We received a new Shoshanna shipment today and I would kill to have the yellow and white floral print dress turned into accent pillows for my new yellow bedroom. I am all about accenting with a pop of color! The neutrals out this year are fresh and crisp but it’s all about the details… like the tiny bow on the back of the nude colored Jerome Rousseau five inch peep toe pumps or the grosgrain floret accent on the toe of the black leather Pandora pump! I'm settling into a glass of Cakebread Chardonnay (2007 Anderson Valley for you oenophiles) after a very exciting day with Betta Carrano, shoe designer, and her wonderfully fabulous right hand woman, Miriam.

I know you expect me to tell you about Betta's amazing summer sandals and flats, but first I have to tell you Miriam's story.... ok, not her whole story, but here are two really fun facts. First, she has twins. A boy and a girl. And the girl, Chella, has GORGEOUS red, curly hair. Like the kind we would pay big money for, but would never get. Grey? Oh, yeah, he's cute, too. If you're the mother of a 3 year old girl in the New York area, watch out. He's a looker!

Second fun fact: Miriam used to be a producer for the Maury Pauvich Show. Really? We thought she was a born shoe salesman!

After last nights celebratory "post bank" champagne, I awoke this morning with a dreadful headache, not from a hangover, but from the infamous clothing BOMB!! You know the kind...everything that once hung in your closet "beautifully" is now in a GIANT ball on the floor.... uggggg...it's so painful when cleaning, especially realizing most items need to be sent back to the dry cleaner for pressing!!

On the flip side- you find out which clothes in your closet are the MOST resilient. The one line that will stand the test of time and trample is MMissoni...check out the pic, 18 hours stuffed in a corner and still wrinkle free!!!

PS....still can't find one of my bo'em feather flop???

So now I have a 2:00 downtown at my banker's office to discuss my finances -- me finances -- WHAT?? Priority #1, what does one wear to such a meeting? Here I am digging through my closet of Alice and Olivia, See by Chloe, Mint, and Paul and Joe duds in search of something sophisticated yet conservative. Ok, ok, ok here we go ...what about my brand new beautiful Hunter Dixon yellow silk tweed cap-sleeved jacket and matching pencil skirt with my favorite nude Jerome Rousseau slingback pumps -- this will be just perfect! I now definitely look the part of successful retail store owner so the next priority is not to embarrass myself in front of the handsome banker. Wish me luck!

Somehow I can’t get out of wedding mode… it occupied my time for seven months (well, more like 10 months) and now that it is all over I’m totally obsessed with mulling over pictures from all the festivities. I am frantically trying to throw some clothes in my Roberta Roller Rabbit Bag so I can head out to the beach. It is supposed to be gorgeous - a little windy - but who cares, you can still get a tan!
